Chora Sfakion

Chora Sfakion (or Hora Sfakion) is a seaside village located 75 km from the city of Chania, on the south coast of the prefecture of Chania, Crete, and is the capital of the region of Sfakia.

This small Cretan village as well as the region of Sfakia, is for those looking for a place to spend their holidays in nature, far away from mass tourism. 

This translates either as relaxing on a quiet beach and or go hiking on the beautiful trails of the region.

What You'll Find in Chora Sfakion

The small village formerly lived only in farming and fishing, before the tourism has been added to its economy.

Apart from the one-storey or two-storey houses, there are small hotels and rooms for rent, mostly family owned, built on the slopes of the village.

Several taverns, cafes and a few shops located mainly around the old harbour, serve the needs of the residents as well as those who choose to spend here their summer holidays, or somewhere around.

Chora Sfakion is not a place that attracts the mass tourism, as is the case on the north coast of the prefecture of Chania. The number of visitors seeking to get close with nature during their holidays is clearly smaller.

Nearby Beaches


Main beach in the village is Vrissi beach, while just outside the village, to the west, lies the beach of Ilingas, at the exit of the homonymous gorge.

To the east, lies the beach of Filaki, as well as a series of small coves around it. Be aware that Filaki beach and the other coves around it frequented by nudists, because all are located just below the slope, where is located the official nudist resort hotel Vritomartis. 

Even further to the east, lies the beach of Frangokastello that will surely visit to see the Venetian Fortress built a few meters from the beach.

All these beaches are accessed by road. However, do not forget to visit two more beaches in the region of Sfakia. 

The beach of Glyka Nera, which in Greek means the sweet water beach, is located to the west, between Ilingas beach and Loutro, and the Marmara beach lying west of Loutro. These two beaches are accessible by taxi boat. Alternatively, you will reach them hiking on the E4 trail. 

Hiking in Sfakia, Crete

Hiking is the most common activity you are able to do during your holidays in Sfakia, and will allow to see up close the natural beauty of this part of the prefecture of Chania, Crete.

In Sfakia, there are many hiking trails, mountainous, steep, within the gorges of the region, or seaside. Tour Options within the Region of Sfakia

Tour the region of Sfakia and discover its beauties. Here are some of your options.

  • Drive to the village of Anopolis which is located at the foothills of the White Mountains. The road climbs with abruptly turns of 180-degree until reaches the plateau of Anopolis, but the view on your way is amazing.
  • Moreover, visit Frangokastello which is located 15 km east of Chora Sfakion. The Venetian fortress is preserved in a very good condition until today. 
  • Catch the ferry and visit the seaside village of Loutro and or the village of Agia Roumeli, which is located at the exit of the Samaria Gorge.
  • While you are in Agia Roumeli, you can stroll by the riverbed to reach the south entrance of the National Park, or go hiking within the gorge until you reach the impressive "Gates," the narrowest point of the gorge of Samaria. This is known as the Lazy way or the Easy way to the Samaria Gorge.

Finally, have in mind that the ANENDYK ferries leaving Chora Sfakion, go to Loutro and then to Agia Roumeli, and also, there is an afternoon ferry leaving Agia Roumeli to Sougia and to Paleochora. So, while leaving Chora Sfakion, you have the chance to visit either Sougia or Paleochora
