Sougia has its own gorge, the Agia
Irini Gorge. A perfect alternative option for hiking, if the
Samaria Gorge seems to you a
long distance to cross.
The trail in Agia Irini Gorge, starts just south of the village of Agia Irini, about 20km north of Sougia, and ends 3km before Sougia, onto the road. Of this point, you will return to Sougia by taxi or another way that you may have planned.
You can go to the entrance of the gorge by taxi or with Sougia's first morning bus that goes to Chania.
The length of the trail is approximately 7.5 kilometres and it will take you about three hours.
Agia Irini Gorge can offer you a beautiful walk by the waters of Agierinioti's stream, under the shade of planes and pines, while viewing the colors of the oleanders.
At the exit of the gorge, a cafeteria awaits you for a cold refreshing juice or coffee.
